Slide rules manufactured by Calderoni later ITG
Brief history |
In 1819 italian-origin István Calderoni opened a grocery store on Váci St. in Budapest, which have been changed later to
an optician shop. In the 1860s, nowadays known world-traveller and art collector Ferenc Hopp, who had been
working for the company from 1846 as an optician-apprentice, became a partner in the venture which was renamed
to Calderoni and Co. Hopp was taken over the company in 1964. From 1872 they distributed teaching instruments too.
The company was so profitable that Hopp could sponsor his collecting journeys around the world. They had been converted to
joint-stock company in 1910 under the name Calderoni Mű- és Tanszervállalat R.-T. (Calderoni Corporation for Instruments and Teaching Tools).
In the 1920s, after introducing the use of slide rules at secondary schools, they started production of wooden slide
rules. The company and smaller workshops belonging to its concern were nationalized in 1948 under the name
Calderoni Mű-, Tanszergyártó és Laboratóriumi Felszerelő Nemzeti Vállalat (Calderoni National Corporation for Making Instruments, Teaching Tools
and Instrumentation of Laboratories), then renamed to Iskolai Taneszközök Gyára
(Factory for School Demonstration Tools) in 1951. They were still produced slide rules for schools for years. In 1968 national companies that have similar profiles were merged to TANÉRT.
In 1989 the corporation changed its name back to Calderoni. The company was liquidated in 2005.
