MBO 800MR
Brief History
The Japanese company Eiko has been manufacturing Unitrex 800 series of small desktop calculators since 1973. The battery-powered machines utilizing Panaplex-style gas-discharge displays, with their landscape layout and orange readout, were striking spots in both offices and homes. In 1974, the latest model in the series, the 800MR, was released in standard portrait format, but equipped with a Japanese chip and display. The NEC uPD277C integrated circuit can be found in tons of calculators of the era; it has sign change and square root functions and includes a memory register with automatic sum. In addition to desktop calculators, Eiko also launched especially cheap pocket calculators, but due to increasing domestic and foreign competition, the Japanese parent company went bankrupt in 1975. Its American and Canadian subsidiaries continued to operate, and distribute Korean and Hong Kong made calculators under the Unitrex brand name.
The Unitrex 800MR has also appeared in the product range of the German company MBO, with the same model number.
