Commodore SR-1800
Brief History
Commodore, seeing the success of its first scientific calculators, begin to develop a whole family of inexpensive calculators that would be largely made of identical parts and could be manufactured in large quantities. There have been a number of variations of scientific and financial calculators with the new GHU chips: they differ mainly in displayed digits, keyboard layout, and design. These low-priced machines with LED display became so successful that Commodore has made the biggest profit from selling scientific calculators. To achieve an even lower price, the japanese division designed an inexpensive scientific calculator with japenese VFD display which can show the results with 8-digit precision, and can be operated on usual penlight batteries. The new design of the SR-1800 was also very successful. The GHU series was replaced in 1978 with new scientific and financial models have significantly simplified internal construction (one PCB and one IC, direct supply from 9V battery). Production of these calculators were moved to Hong Kong.
