Brother 518AZ

Brief History
Brother Industries, reworking its previous pocket calculators, released the Z-series in 1974. Interestingly, the four penlight batteries needed for operation (AZ models) — or the rechargeable batteries (Z models) — instead of the usual horizontal battery compartments — which are increasing either the thickness, or unused areas of the machine — were placed on two sides, around the narrow PCB and keyboard. In the model 408, the previous IC was replaced, and can calculate square root, change sign and display pi constant; the 508, in addition to that, has memory; the 518 had reciprocal and squaring capabilities. Only the scientific model, the 508SR, took up all the available space. A further reduction in size was only possible by changing the power supply, so the D-Series, which were available from 1975, can be operated with only two penlight batteries, but with identical calculating capabilities.
